Chicago Felony Lawyers

A felony is a serious charge. A felony conviction carries the possibility of prison time and other collateral consequences. A felony is classified as a criminal offense that is punishable by a minimum of one year in the Illinois Department of Correction (IDOC) and fines of $25,000 or more. While every felony is serious, some felony charges have more severe penalties than others.

Most felony offenses offer the possibility of probation depending on your background, while others carry mandatory prison sentences upon conviction (i.e. residential burglary or a fourth DUI offense). There are five main classes of felonies

Class 4 Felony: 1-3 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
Class 3 Felony: 2-5 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
Class 2 Felony: 3-7 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
Class 1 Felony: 4-15 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
Class X Felony: 6-30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections
